The launch of the first ATM machine at Bank of Ireland.
This was the first of many steps towards the self-service banking system we have today.
A spokesman for Bank of Ireland describes this new service as the first of many to make life easier for the customer.
What we're trying to do is to provide customers with the ability to do some of the basic banking transactions outside of normal banking hours and also during banking hours.
He acknowledges that customers may still want to carry out many other transactions in person with a cashier and says that the new service won't do away with cashiers.
