Fianna Fáil celebrates 75 years since the foundation of the political party.
The Mansion House is the venue for the Fianna Fáil 75 year celebrations. Taoiseach and party leader of Bertie Ahern says Fianna Fáil has a proud record in contributing to the sound and healthy democracy in Ireland.
Celebrations began by party members marching from Dáil Eireann to the Mansion House. The venue holds historic significance, having served as the seat of the first Dáil in 1919. Members of Ógra Fianna Fáil presented the Taoiseach with a 75th birthday cake.
In the Oak Room of the Mansion House, the Bertie Ahern delivered a speech recognising the important role that Fianna Fáil has played and continues to play in Irish politics. He also had praise for previous party leaders, including Éamon de Valera, Seán Lemass, Jack Lynch, Charles Haughey and Albert Reynolds. He also referenced the Fianna Fáil record on Northern Ireland and the peace process. He also acknowledged that the party has made mistakes and that lessons have been learnt.
