Just five days to go before the introduction of decimalisation in Ireland. RTÉ News reports on the preparations taking place for the transition from the old pounds, shillings, and pence, to the new Irish pound and pence. Pre-decimal coins will now be phased out in place of the new decimal coins.
One million pounds worth of the new coins have already been distributed to shops and businesses and the Central Bank has a further two million pounds worth in its vaults, ready to be pumped into the economy when required.
