Dublin Fire Brigade tackle a blaze at Iveagh House, the offices of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The alarm was raised yesterday afternoon when Gearóid Ó Cléirigh, Deputy Chief of Protocol at the Department of Foreign Affairs, noticed smoke coming from an office on the top floor of the building.

Gardaí were alerted and several units from Dublin Fire Brigade arrived and confined the fire to the top floor of the building. Offices and reception rooms on the lower floors have been badly damaged by water. The office of the Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Patrick Hillery was not affected, and no one was injured.

Arson has been ruled out, says Hugh McCann, secretary of the department, who has conducted an assessment of the site. Staff will be housed in different locations on a temporary basis, but at this time,

We're more concerned with what papers are missing or destroyed.
