Dublin Fire Brigade units from seven stations fight a fire in McKenzies Hardware Store on Pearse Street.
Thomas McKenzie founded his company in 1863. The three storey hardware store and seeds warehouse on Pearse Street is one of the largest in Dublin.
A Dublin Fire Brigade crew from the nearby Tara Street fire station were at the scene within minutes of the alarm being raised. The extent of the blaze required required additional assistance, with fire crews from Buckingham Street, Dorset Street, Dolphin’s Barn, Rathmines and as far away as Swords and Howth being deployed.
No one was injured in the blaze but the entire stock of the store was destroyed. Pearse Street was cordoned off which resulted in severe traffic congestion in the city centre.
