Human chain demonstration celebrates life and calls for an end to the nuclear arms race.

Organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) the human chain was intended to link the American and the Russian Embassies in Dublin but never quite made it.

A CND spokesman said today's link up was an effective demonstration of the real human contact that needs to be made between the Soviet Union and the United States.

The demonstration was supported by trade union leaders and politicians such as Proinsias De Rossa and Michael D Higgins. The campaign also gained support from organisations throughout the country including the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA), the National Tenants Association, and the United Nations Association.

The demonstration marked the anniversary of the first atomic explosion in New Mexico in 1945.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) called on the government to take a major international initiative to end the arms race. CND now claim that the superpowers now have enough nuclear weapons to repeat a million Hiroshimas.
