Rita Childers talks about living in Áras an Uachtaráin when her husband Erskine was President of Ireland.

Rita Dudley married Erskine Hamilton Childers on 16 September 1952. In June 1973, Erskine Childers became the fourth President of Ireland and Rita became first lady. His presidency, however, was tragically short Erskine Childers died in office on 17 November 1974.

Rita Childers recalls her time in Áras an Uachtaráin and share her feelings about the idea of the term, first lady, which she found faintly amusing. She never felt she had done anything to earn such a distinction other than simply marry a man who happened to become president.

I think it's a peculiar title

Rita Childers says managing the residence of the president was not unlike that of any housewife, although on a much larger scale. Catering for twelve people every day required plenty of help. Over time, she became deeply familiar with the house and its collection of artworks and enjoyed giving tours to visiting groups. She has a real appreciation of the opportunity to live in such a beautiful and historic home.

Although not at the forefront of political life, Rita Childers maintained a strong interest in national affairs. She describes how Erskine Childers after a long day at work would share the issues of his day with her. He was a great feminist who firmly believed in equality. She has fond memories of them sitting up in bed at three in the morning, discussing politics over sandwiches and soup.

The happiest memory of all is meeting Erskine Childers for the very first time. They were introduced through a mutual friend.
