On this day in 1974 the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) announced plans to build a nuclear power plant at Carnsore Point in Co. Wexford.
Mr. Seán Coakley of the ESB Design and Production Development Department comments on the size of the proposed station, employment possibilities on the construction of the plant, and the operational side of the plant once it opens. Coakley also outlines why Carnsore Point was chosen as the site for Ireland's fist nuclear power station, and the possibility of further plants in Ireland.
A RTÉ News report from 26 April 1974.
There was much opposition to the proposal over the following years and the plan to introduce nuclear power to Ireland was eventually dropped.
