President Patrick Hillery officially opens the Hawk's Well Theatre in Sligo.
Rhoda McManus Director of the Hawk's Well Theatre describes it as a unique venture.
It's the first time that two semi-state bodies, Bord Fáilte and the Arts Council, have combined to put up capital funding for a new arts facility.
Rhoda McManus outlines the challenges of running the a theatre and commends efforts of Sligo people who have been working to set up this venue for a long time. The hopes are that the theatre will provide an opportunity for the public to have good quality theatre presented to them, as well as music and film. The Hawk's Well will also provide a venue amateur theatre groups to put on their productions.
On the opening night, the Druid Theatre Company, the only professional theatre company in the west, presented Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing'.
