Heike Lausen launches the Margot Jacob
In 1975 a 50,000 ton bulk carrier ship called Margot Jacob was launched in Verolme Dockyard, Co Cork.
Rushbrooke is an urban area on the western side of Cobh on Great Island in Cork Harbour. Dutch man Cornelius Verolme purchased the dockyard in 1957 and he assisted in the development of the Irish Ship Building Industry. Under Verolme's stewardship, 33 ships were built in the dockyard and at its peak, over 1500 men were employed. The ship building industry in Ireland collapsed in the early 1980s and the dockyard closed. In recent years the dockyard has been redeveloped into a commercial and small industries park, while Cork Dockyard Holdings Ltd. continues with ship and boat repair.
The report shows the enormous ship sliding down the pier into the water.
