Barry McGuigan age 17 from Clones, Co. Monaghan wins the title as national senior bantamweight champion.
In their first season in senior boxing both Barry McGuigan, from Smithborough Amateur Boxing Club, Co. Monaghan, and Mick Holmes, from the Phoenix Club in Dublin, fight it out for the title as senior boxing bantamweight champion. At the age of just 17 McGuigan goes into the final round ahead of his opponent in points and takes the title, the first of many that would see him go on to become World Boxing Association featherweight champion.
Since retiring from boxing McGuigan has appeared on many television shows and was the winner of Hell's Kitchen in 2007. McGuigan now works as a boxing pundit for Sky TV.
