The new World Featherweight Boxing Champion, Barry McGuigan returned to Ulster and received a hero's welcome.

On 8 June 1985 Barry McGuigan became the World Featherweight Boxing Champion after defeating Eusebio Pedroza of Panama.

Two days later he returned home to Northern Ireland beginning with a civic reception at Belfast City Hall.

McGuigan was welcomed at Aldergrove Airport by Belfast Lord Mayor John Carson, members of the media, family, friends and fans.

RTÉ's David Ross managed to catch a somewhat stunned McGuigan on his way to the press conference and got his initial reaction to the welcome.

Barry McGuigan was accompanied by his wife Sandra and son Blain. From the airport VIP lounge, the champion anticipated what lay ahead with his return to his home town of Clones, Co. Monaghan.

All I want is for people to enjoy themselves...I enjoy making people happy

Before heading on to Clones, he was paraded through Belfast city centre on the back of a truck.

Barry made his way down Royal Avenue through a sea of outstretched hands.

After finally arriving at Belfast City Hall, McGuigan pleaded with supporters to stay safe in the crowd.
