Ireland's newest arts venue is set to open its doors.

The Helix at Dublin City University provides facilities for virtually every aspect of the arts and its management says it will break down barriers and make the arts accessible to everyone.

It's the equivalent of the National Concert Hall, the Abbey, an experimental theatre space and an art gallery all under one roof.

The Helix was built at a cost of €36.5 million and included a €7 million grant from the Department of Education Director along with private funding. of The Helix Nick Reed describes it as "a wonderfully exciting building" with three auditoria ranging from an intimate 150 seats to a superb international standard orchestral concert hall giving the flexibility to provide every type of live performance.

The name 'Helix' comes from the central chrome staircase and is a key architectural feature in creating a bright, airy space. Architect Dr Andrzej Wejchert says that the building is designed to make it easy for people to find where they are going.

The Helix will be run as a commercial theatre without any state subsidy.

Classical music buffs can expect to rub shoulders with rock fans in the foyer.

President Mary McAleese will officially open The Helix later this evening in the company of 1,200 invited guests.
