Our comedy spot this week goes to a fella with a completely different line of comedy.
Tony Malone who combines singing with humour, takes to the stage with an acoustic guitar. He begins his routine by checking the audience knows the 1967 track ‘If I Were A Carpenter" composed by the American folk musician Tim Hardin. When it is clear they do, he announces,
What I am going to do is the Irish cultural version of that song, it’s a little song called ‘If I Were A Garda’.
Originally from the Liberties in Dublin, Tony Malone is a seasoned cabaret entertainer who has supported stars such as Tony Christie and Acker Bilk.
‘Cabaret’ was presented by singer Sonny Knowles and featured variety as well as other musical acts. It ran on RTÉ Television between 1975 and 1977.
This episode of ‘Cabaret’ was recorded in RTÉ’s Studio 1 in February 1976. It was broadcast on 2 April 1976. The producer is Tom McGrath.
