Protesters and Gardaí clash at a Dublin Housing Action Committee demonstration.

The Dublin Housing Action Committee organised a public meeting and sit-down protest in Dublin to highlight the imprisonment of its secretary Denis Dennehy, who refused to leave a house where he was squatting in Mountjoy Square.

The demonstrators marched from St Stephen's Green to the General Post Office (GPO) where a protest meeting was held. The protesters, many of them students, staged a peaceful sit-down protest on O'Connell Bridge. Gardaí tried to clear the protesters from obstructing the thoroughfare and skirmishes broke out.

Gardaí eventually cleared the demonstrators from O'Connell Bridge. Protesters returned to the GPO and listened to addresses by the Jesuit, Father Michael Sweetman and Fionnbarra O' Dochartaigh of the Derry Housing Action Committee.
