The government announces plans to release state owned land for the construction of reasonably priced homes.

The Affordable Housing Initiative was set up as part of a government promise in the 2002 national pay agreement talks to allow those on low to middle incomes to buy homes at reasonable prices.

Sites would be made available to local authorities to allow them to build homes. Under the scheme land in Dublin, Cork and Waterford is to be made available.

To date, opposition parties have been critical of the government's plans saying that while land had been allocated, construction work had yet to begin.
