Agreement on college budget deferred after students stage a sit-in at the National College of Art and Design.
About 300 National College of Art and Design (NCAD) students occupied the administrative office in the college in protest against the proposed £400,000 cutback to the budget for 1989. The students threatened to continue their sit-in, unless they got assurances that the college's governing body would fight the cuts.
The President of the NCAD Student Union wants the governing body to stand in solidarity with the students and to put pressure on the Education Authority (HEA) and the Department of Education to reconsider the grant allocation to the college.
This college being the only college of its type we believe it is a very important function and role within third level education.
Students gatecrashed the meeting of the governing body to ask them not to vote on the budget and to negotiate with the HEA on the grounds that its allocation was inadequate.
The board agreed to student demands deferring agreement on college budget in order to try and secure increased funding for the college.
