No saving bacon factory chimney as a feature of the Limerick landscape. The J Matterson and Sons chimney is demolished to make way for a shopping arcade.
The Matterson bacon factory chimney stack, a landmark on the Limerick skyline for generations, is situated on a site earmarked for a shopping arcade.
Councillor Frank Leddon of the Limerick Planning Committee wanted to have the large chimney stack preserved, however Councillor Clem Casey disagreed, saying as the chimney had little historical value and should be demolished.
The bulldozers moved in but the chimney was stubborn and would not fall.
But finally after a full day’s activity it fell, giving its way to progress.
