One of the early ambassadors of electric cars gets the opportunity to put an ecar to the test three decades on.
Twenty-one members of the public have been chosen from 12,000 applicants to drive an electric car for up to a year. The new "E-car ambassadors" come from all over Ireland, including Sean Clancy from County Galway who developed his own electric vehicle thirty-two years ago. Sean is clearly an ambassador for the electric car. In 1980 in the village of Moycullen, Sean and his friend Sean Walsh converted a conventional car to an electric one and made RTÉ News at the time with Mr Walsh predicting
We think it's the car of the future.
Despite having an idea ahead of its time, the two men tried and failed to get funding to develop the car further.
Thirty-two years later Sean is just one of twenty-one members of the public selected to create awareness of electric cars.
The ecar initiative is sponsored by ESB.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 29 August 2012. The reporter is Philip Bromwell.
