Telefís Scoile looks at the meaning of Seán Ó Riordáin's poem 'Tost'.
In his poem ‘Tost’, which can be translated as ‘silence’, the poet describes the fear he feels when the well of inspiration has run dry, and he meets only silence in his mind. It is akin to the way a priest feels when he starts to lose his faith, according to presenter Seamus Páircéir.
Tá m’aigne fé ghlas
Níl agam cead isteach
Le go ríordánóinn
an farasbarr neamhscríte.
Critics had claimed that Seán Ó Ríordáin had mangled the Irish language, but Ó Ríordáin claims that each poet must create his or her own private language, in order to fully express himself or herself.
