The Calor Gas Housewife of the Year is announced at the Gaiety Theatre.

Presenter Gay Byrne announces the winner of the Calor Gas Housewife of the Year.

Our housewife of the year is from Carrigaline county Cork Elaine Murphy.

At the ceremony in the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin Elaine Murphy is presented with the winning sash and a bouquet of flowers. The prize includes £1,500 in cash, a Calor central heating system and a supply of calor gas.

Judges on the night included actor Mick Lally, former Miss Ireland Michelle Rocca, and Simply Delicious presenter Darina Allen.

The other finalists on the night were Noelle Ford from Ranelagh, Maureen Bruen from Sligo, Geraldine O'Mahony from Roscommon, Betty Carr from Malahide and Margaret Barrett from Cork. All six finalists received a Calor cooker and a supply of Calor gas.

Elaine Murphy and her farmer husband Matt are parents to seven adopted children.

The final of the Housewife of the Year was broadcast on 20 April 1991.
