Thrilling finish to the Irish Open sees Ballesteros triumph over Langer on the second play off hole.
On 23 June 1985, Bernhard Langer shot a brilliant last round of 63 setting a new course record at Royal Dublin to lead the 1985 Irish Open on 6 under par. Out on the course Seve Ballesteros was 3 shots behind with four holes to play. The Spaniard birdied holes 15,16 and 17 and made par on 18 to force a play off.
Playing the 17th as the first deciding hole both players made par and to the delight of the huge crowd they moved on to play the 18th hole again. Ballesteros and Langer both made the green with their approach shots. The German putted first leaving his effort short. Ballesteros sunk his 35 foot putt to an enormous roar from the crowd. Seve celebrated his victory with some enthusiastic shadow boxing.
Shown here is the action from the final play off hole taken from 'Sporting Year 1985', broadcast on 27 December 1985.
