An altar girl finds herself in news after a bishop prevents here from serving at a confirmation ceremony.
Altar girl Jenny Ryan made headlines in 1990 when a bishop banned her from serving at confirmation. The 11 year old had been serving mass for two years at her local parish church in Dublin. She tells presenter Andy Ruane how used she feels in this extract from 'Scratch Saturday'.
It was the Catholic Church's position at the time that females were not allowed to act as altar servers. In 1994 the Vatican sent a letter to bishops around the world giving the seal of approval for altar girls. However it stressed that the new ruling would have no impact on the Catholic Church's continued opposition to the ordination of women.
This edition of 'Scratch Saturday' was broadcast on 14 April 1990. The presenter is Andy Ruane.
