Historic night for Janet Catterall at St Finbarr's Cathedral in Cork.
The Church of Ireland ordained its first woman priest in the Republic of Ireland. A native of Wigan in England, Janet Catterall had already been serving as a deacon and youth chaplain in Dunmanway in west Cork, where her husband David was a minister.
I feel very humble, because it is happening for me, and so many of my sister clergy in England are still waiting and longing for this thing. And quite by chance by my coming to Ireland, this has happened for me.
Janet Catterall was ordained by the Bishop of Cork, Dr Roy Warkle. Her husband, mother and two of her sons were present for the occasion.
