Micheál Mac Liammóir on preparations for a Gate Theatre production of 'Hamlet' at Kronborg Castle in Denmark.

The role of Hamlet is being played by 53 year old Micheál Mac Liammóir and Claudius by Hilton Edwards.

Micheál Mac Liammóir gives his impressions of Denmark.

I fell in love with Denmark on first sight but then I very easily fall in love with countries I've never seen before.

He says that Kronborg is an extraordinary place so impressive that it is difficult for an actor to compete with it. Kronborg Castle is immortalised as Elsinore in Hamlet.

It's like a place in a fairy story and extremely beautiful, elegant and severe at the same time.

The play opens on Friday 13th June.

Mac Liammóir In Denmark (1952)

Since arriving in Denmark, Micheál Mac Liammóir has been reading some Irish language translations of the works of Hans Christian Andersen. The only thing he disapproves of in Denmark is the weather which he says is worse than in Ireland.

It's a very beautiful country and to me very strange.

This interview was recorded on 9 June 1952. The interviewer is PP O'Reilly.
