In a private ceremony, the new St Patrick's Training College for teachers in Drumcondra, Dublin is opened.
The original St Patrick's Training College for teachers in the north Dublin suburb of Drumcondra opened in 1875. Under architect Andrew Devane of Robinson Keefe and Devane, the campus has undergone extensive redevelopment.
The new £1,500,000 college is opened by Minister for Education Donogh O'Malley in a private ceremony. The opening is followed by the solemn dedication of the new college chapel and the blessing of the college buildings by the Archbishop of Dublin, Most Reverend Dr John Charles McQuaid.
The increased accommodation in the new facility will provide about 50 additional teachers a year and help the teacher pupil ratio in primary schools.
The new college is modern in design and the focal point is the chapel situated between two main sections the students’ residences and the teaching, administration and communal buildings.
The old college has been converted into lecture halls, seminar and tutorial rooms, staff room, science, art and geography rooms and a language laboratory. The old college chapel has been converted into the college library.
The formal opening of the new St Patrick's Training College will take place on 5 May 1967.
