Film and music knowledge is put to the test in the panel game show 'Off The Beat'.

Brendan Balfe presents the television panel game show 'Off the Beat' which tests the music and film knowledge of contestants.

The show they said shouldn’t be done.

Regular team captains, writer Hugh Leonard and broadcaster Frank Hall, are invited to introduce their team members. On Hugh Leonard’s team are the RTÉ continuity announcer Clair Stanbridge and an architect from Tramore in County Waterford, Barry Hennessy.

Musical accompaniment on the show is provided by vocalist Des Smyth and the Jim Doherty Trio.

‘Off the Beat’ began life as a summer RTÉ Radio series in 1979. It featured captains Frank Hall and Hugh Leonard who were joined by various guest personalities. Central to the radio show was Jim Doherty’s band with vocal by Des Smyth.

‘Off the Beat’ transitioned to television with the expansion of the teams to include a member of the public and the addition of a top class prize. ‘Off the Beat’ was first broadcast on television on 16 March 1980.
