U2 receive humanitarian honour of the highest level in Portugal.

Rock band U2 received one of Portugal's highest honours in recognition of their humanitarian efforts on behalf of African poverty and human rights issues.

The award was presented by President Jorge Sampaio at a ceremony in Lisbon. Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry were each presented with an Order of Liberty (Ordem da Liberdade) pin.  

This is the first time that Portugal has awarded the Order to a foreign music group.
