U2 rang in the new year in Dublin to a radio audience estimated to be around five hundred million people.
The U2 New Year concert at the Point Depot in Dublin was broadcast live by 2FM and BBC Radio. DJ Dave Fanning counted down the seconds to midnight.
The band that was dubbed the greatest live rock band in the world in the 1980s made live music history in the first minute of the 1990s.
U2 manager Paul McGuinness points out that it is one of U2's smallest shows in years with just 4,500 places at the venue. They decision to have a live broadcast of the concert live on 2FM and BBC radio opened up the event to to an estimated five hundred million people.
The largest radio audience since Live Aid.
The concert was broadcast live in seventeen European countries.
