Roddy Doyle on combining his work as a teacher, novelist, playwright and now screenwriter.

Roddy Doyle makes sees no distinction between his work as a novelist and playwright, and being an English and geography teacher in Greendale Community School in Kilbarrack, Dublin. He believes they are complementary to each other.

Many of Roddy Doyle's pupils have given him positive feedback about his novel 'The Commitments' and his Passion Machine Theatre company play ‘Brownbread’. He is relieved they have not criticised his work as that would hurt him more than a bad review from a critic.

As a teacher, Doyle rarely criticises, preferring instead to motivate pupils. He recently enjoyed the depiction of the student and teacher dynamic in the film ‘Stand and Deliver’ based on the true story of a teacher who successfully inspires students to learn calculus.

Roddy Doyle’s first draught of a screenplay for 'The Commitments' is complete and he is currently in negotiations with film producers.

We're talking small bucks, but we're talking a big film.
