There are mixed views from Dublin citizens on how the city is marking being one thousand years old.

As Dublin celebrates being a thousand years old there are divided opinions on what the millennium is and how it should be celebrated.

In the mid-1980s much of Dublin city was in a dilapidated state and the city manager at the time Frank Feely came up with the idea to celebrate the city's millennium. It was hoped that the celebrations marking a thousand years of Dublin would provide a much-needed boost for the city and its citizens.

'Evening Extra' took to the streets of Dublin to find out what the citizens thought about the millennium and reactions were varied.

I really don't understand it.

Sure what would I know about it.

I think it's great.

It's getting the Corporation to do work a little quicker.

It's sort of bringing Dublin back to life again.

I think everything looks much brighter and cheerful.

I think it's a great idea. I think, get all the Dublin people together, have a good celebration and make the best of it.

I love Dublin. I'm proud to be a Dublin man but I'd love to see brought back the joviality, the gaiety there was in my time but I can't see that coming back now.

This episode of 'Evening Extra' was broadcast on 11 February 1988. The presenter is Bibi Baskin.
