The Monument of Light or The Spike a new public structure for Dublin gets the go ahead.

In 1966 Nelson's Pillar, which stood on O'Connell Street in Dublin, was damaged by a bomb and then demolished. A new structure is now set to replace it in the form of the 324 foot high stainless steel 'Monument of Light'.

The announcement was made by Environment Minister Noel Dempsey who says the construction will take nineteen months. At a cost of £3 million, the monument will form the centrepiece of the rejuvenation of O'Connell Street in Dublin which is also to get a new granite plaza.

The Spike, will be erected on the site once occupied by Nelson's pillar.
