Snow and freezing weather bring traffic to standstill in Cork.

Severe weather has made February one of the coldest that Ireland has experienced in decades.

Two nights ago a record low temperature was recorded for Cork City. Ground temperatures reached minus 14.5 degrees, the coldest since 1884.

Motorists have been advised to take care on the roads, and thousands of people in Cork walked to work this morning as CIÉ (Córas Iompair Éireann) cancelled services due to icy road conditions. Many homes in the city are without water due to frozen or burst pipes.

Freezing temperatures are being felt all over the country, with icicles forming on the famous Glencar waterfall in County Leitrim.

A large number of rural schools have remained closed. In Cork city it was a normal school day, but with the added excitement of playing in the snow at break time.
