Glór na nGael honours the town of Carlow for work in developing the Irish language.

Glór na nGael was established as a county competition in 1961 awarding efforts to promote the Irish language in the family, community development, and business.

It may seem surprising that Carlow would win a competition promoting the Irish language when it was competing against towns and villages from the Gaeltacht.

Coming first in a competition which focuses its attention on the Irish language and events related to it is no mean feat.

Deirdre Mhic Bhraonáin Secretary of Carlow Conradh na Gaeilge explains how Carlow got involved in the competition.

Carlow has a naíonra, an Irish language nursery, attended by 30 pupils. A new Irish language primary school has also recently opened in the town. Support for Irish language projects has also been provided by the local business community. While many people do not speak Irish in Carlow there is a good will towards the language and its promotion.
