In a bid to make city centre shopping safer, a new security barrier built around the centre of Belfast becomes operational.

A two mile long security cordon built around the centre of Belfast comes in to operation in a bid to make city centre shopping easier.

Under the new segment plan, people enter Belfast city centre at one of four designated security gates. Here they and their belongings are searched. Once permitted to pass inside the centre, people may then move about in freedom and shop at their leisure.
