The enquiry into the Betelgeuse oil tanker disaster at Whiddy Island, Bantry opens.
On 8 January 1979 the Betelgeuse a French oil tanker exploded at Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay killing fifty people. Many of the bodies were never recovered and part of the ship still sits on the seabed. Salvage operation are ongoing and oil emissions continue to pollute Bantry Bay.
