Former President of Ireland and Clare man Patrick Hillery is honoured by the naming of the library in Miltown Malbay after him.

Dr Patrick Hillery (1923-2008) has been honoured by his native County Clare. A library close to his home at Miltown Malbay was formally named after him.

Dr Patrick Hillery is regarded by many locally as one of the most famous and accomplished public figures from the region. He was born in Spanish Point just outside Miltown Malbay where he still has a house staying in close contact with his County Clare roots.

Dr Hillery worked as the local doctor in Miltown Malbay before being elected as a TD in 1951 marking the beginning of a successful career as a Minister, EU Commissioner, and President of Ireland for two terms of office.

His achievements have now been honoured by Clare locals as the Miltown Malbay library is named after him.

Clare County Librarian Noel Crowley says,

This is an opportunity to honour a great Clare man, a great President, the man who led us into Europe, and it's much better to honour someone while they're still alive.

Dr Hillery said that his achievements were always the result of the support he had received over the years from the people of County Clare.

I am very honoured and specially since it's a library. Libraries are so important in a community.
