Patrick Hillery becomes the sixth President of Ireland at an inauguration ceremony in Dublin Castle.
The day that Patrick Hillery took office as President was marked by church and state events in Dublin. The President to be and his family attended an ecumenical service at the Pro-Cathedral. Archbishop of Dublin Dr Dermot Ryan led prayers and good wishes from the five main church leaders for the new presidency.
At St Patrick's Hall in Dublin Castle Patrick Hillery was sworn in as the sixth President of Ireland. A gun salute was provided by the Irish Defence Forces. President Hillery was then driven through the streets of Dublin with an escort of outriders to Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix Park. Patrick Hillery his wife Maeve, son John and daughter Vivienne posed for the press on the steps of their new home.
