On 7 November 1990 the Irish people elected their first woman President of Ireland.
After all the votes were counted and victory was declared Mary Robinson gave a victory speech describing her journey to becoming President,
As President of Ireland I must be President for all the people. But more than that, I want to be President for all the people because I was elected by men and women of all parties and none.
In her speech, she gives a special mention to the women of Ireland, Mná na hÉireann,
Who instead of rocking the cradle, rocked the system.
She goes on to outline her plans for office and her commitment to pluralism and peace.
