The Luas was launched on 30 June 2004 bringing trams back onto the streets of Dublin city for the first time in 55 years.
It was a historic occasion, passengers tell Orla O'Donnell in this RTÉ News report. People queued up to be among the first to travel on the green line from Sandyford in south Dublin to St Stephen's Green.
Many recorded the trip for posterity.
The service was officially launched by Minister for Transport Séamus Brennan, who says it was a day for celebration. Frank Allen, Chief Executive of the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) says the new service will improve the quality of lives and reduce traffic congestion.
