A plaque is unveiled in memory of Edward Gaffney who was killed while serving with the United Nations in Congo.

Twenty two year old Edward Gaffney was on his second peacekeeping tour of duty with the United Nations in Congo. A member of the 35th Infantry Battalion, he was driving one of two trucks in Elisabethville which came under fire on 13 September 1961, and was fatally wounded in the attack.

A special Mass was celebrated by Fr Matthew Doyle in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Camolin. The large attendance included members of the Gaffney family, the local community, comrades and many Congo veterans.

The memorial is unveiled Colonel Hugh McNamee, Officer Commanding of the 6th Brigade Kilkenny.
