Tralee wins the top Glór na nGael award for the promotion of the Irish language in community life.

For the first time ever, the town of Tralee in County Kerry is announced as the winner of the Glór na nGael competition for 1979/1980. The town wins the top prize of £1,000 and the Oisín Kelly designed trophy for being the All Ireland winner. In addition, Tralee was also named the top town for promoting the sale of publications in Irish and for promoting Irish-manufactured goods.

The Glór na nGael competition was established to find the town or area that has done the most throughout the year to promote the use of Irish in community life. It is organised by the Irish language organisation Comhdháil Náisiunta na Gaeilge and sponsored by Chumann na Sagart (Association of Irish-speaking religious).
