Testimony taken from the transcripts of the inquiry into Bloody Sunday is brought to a London stage.
A production at the Tricycle Theatre is using testimonies given to an inquiry that examined the circumstances that led to the deaths at a civil rights march in Derry in 1972. The production uses transcripts from the inquiry, which heard evidence from over nine hundred witnesses.
The Bloody Sunday Inquiry took six years to hear the evidence of almost a thousand witnesses.
The script is taken directly from witness testimony. One scene shows Bishop Edward Daly, played by Michael O'Hagan, refuting any claims that there was a threat posed to the army before they opened fire. Artistic director Nicholas Kent explains that they tried to get the essence of the characters from the inquiry.
This is actuality rather than a dramatic contortion of it.
Sorcha Cusack plays Bernadette McAliskey and she prepared for the role by watching archive footage from the inquiry.
The Saville report into the deaths in Derry in January 1972 is not due to be published for several months.
It is expected that the production will visit Dublin for the theatre festival later in the year.
