The new managers of The Gaiety Theatre have plans for the future of the Dublin venue.

One of the oldest theatres in Dublin The Gaiety has been closed since January, when the management company Eamonn Andrews Productions Ltd. went into liquidation.

A new company has taken over running the theatre and announced that the venue will open to the public again in October, following extensive restoration work.

The Gaiety has been entertaining audiences since 1871 and general manager Dick Condon is hopeful that this new chapter in its history will be profitable financially as well as culturally, given its standing as a venerable theatrical institution,

It’s of enormous importance not just to Dublin but to to Ireland, to the theatre industry.

The refurbishment plans include a café and gallery, and a balanced programme of mixed theatre to cater for all tastes is promised.

For those making their living from the stage it is welcome news. Maureen Potter whose name is synonymous with The Gaiety tells RTÉ News,

Spring is the time for opening things, it’s lovely.
