New technology at TCD will allow multiple individuals to access the university computer system at the same time.

Manager at the computer laboratory at Trinity College Dublin, John Moriarty, describes the potential offered by the new technology.

Multi-access computer is one in which several people can in fact use the system at the one time.

Up to nine students will now be able to access the computer at the one time through the use of terminal sets.

The computer has many functions across many faculties at the university. It could be used to assist an engineer in designing a bridge. An Arts student could use it to identify the characteristics of an author.

It will be used here in Trinity to catalogue the very large flow of books that enter the library and to make the information about these books available to the academic staff members who are interested in keeping abreast of the new publications in their field.

The computer system will also be available for use by business people. The system has already been used in the acoustic design of television studios. It can be used in any type of business to help management to efficiently plan their operations.
