Language research institute established in the Franciscan College in Gormanston, County Meath.

Fr Colmán Ó Huallacháin , linguist and Irish language activist, established An Teanglann at Gormanston College in 1964. Fr Ó Huallacháin is also the director of the language institute, one of the first of its kind in the country.

These institutes are being established in very many countries in all continents.

Research into all aspects of language will be undertaken including psycholinguistic problems, socio-linguistic problems, and issues relating to language and culture. The research extends to modern European languages as well as English.

We have a very great need for making some positive suggestions about improving the standard of oral English in the country.

The institute will provide services for researchers and teacher training. It is envisaged that the benefits will flow from the teachers into schools and homes.

Research carried out at An Teanglann contributed to the launch of the educational Irish language radio and television programme 'Buntús Cainte' in 1967.

The report shows Donogh O'Malley, Minister for Education and others at a meeting.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 7 September 1967.
