Construction begins marking a new era for University College Dublin

President Éamon de Valera turns the sod on a new science building for University College Dublin at Belfield, Dublin. Upon the arrival of President De Valera, the Army No 1 Band sounded the presidential salute and played the national anthem. The site was blessed by Archbishop Most Rev Dr Charles McQuaid. Attendance at the ceremony included Taoiseach Seán Lemass, members of the government, the diplomatic corps, the judiciary and the Oireachtas.

President de Valera was received by Dr Michael Tierney, President of UCD and inspected a Guard of Honour drawn from the Eastern Command. The president turned the first sod with a ceremonial spade presented by the contractors McInerney builders.

Speaking in Irish, President de Valera said that this was a proud day for the university. Dr Michael Tierney also spoke at the event.

It is estimated that the new science building will cost in the region of £2 million and will consist of four blocks in a u-shape. The building was designed by Professor of Architecture, Joseph Downes.
