After 106 years in operation it is the end of the line for Dunkettle Railway Station, east of Cork City.

Originally opened on 10 November 1859, there are few Corkonians who have not passed through Dunkettle Station, east of Cork City on their way to Cobh or Youghal. Originally, Dunkettle was one of the most important railway terminals in County Cork. When Tivoli Railway Station closed in 1930, Dunkettle became the sole station between Little Island and Cork. However in more recent times, the the number of passengers using Dunkettle Railway Station have been in decline.

In December 1965 Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) made the announcement that after 106 years in service, Dunkettle Railway Station will be closed to passenger traffic, the only class of traffic for which it currently servicing.

From 7 February 1966 service of trains to and from the station will be terminated. An alternative service for passengers between Cork and Dunkettle and between Dunkettle and Little Island will be provided by the existing road passenger services.
