A group of young performers from Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht form the opening sequence for this episode of 'Oireachtas ‘84'.
Maolíosa, Rosie, Tanya, Chris-Anne, Paula and Marianne, aged from eight to eleven years perform as ‘Mummers Na Samhna’ for the RTÉ production ‘Oireachtas ‘84’.
Mummers are a group of masked and costumed performers who play music and perform specific types of plays for an audience. They traditionally perform at Hallowe'en and during the Christmas period, but in recent times they also make appearances at festivals and community events. In some parts of Ireland they wear straw masks.
Led by a ‘Captain’ who announces their arrival and asks for permission to perform, they receive food or money as a token of gratitude when the performance is over.
In this instance they did not keep the money for themselves but decided instead to donate what they collected to famine relief work in Ethiopia.
