Media Lab Europe a centre for research and innovation in technology based on the MIT model opens in Dublin.
Innovation, fun and technological wizardry come to Dublin at Media Lab Europe (MLE).
The lab is the first ever overseas offshoot of its mother company, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and will be a centre of excellence in hi-tech innovation. Based in a former Guinness Brewery building MLE will employ two hundred and fifty people.

Media Lab Europe will focus on new approaches to internet related technology focusing on e-commerce and interactive arts.
Bringing Media Lab to Ireland was first mooted by Esat millionaire Denis O'Brien with the support of the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. There will be an initial investment of £28 million from the taxpayer. MLE will also be funded through sponsorship deals.
Nicolas Negroponte, Director of MIT Media Laboratory, commends the pool of talent available in Ireland.
The workforce at the lab will be international with just one third made up of Irish workers.
